Guide to Wordpress Blogging

Wordpress is great for blogging. There are a couple of reasons for this but the main one is the ease at which you can add an article. It is very user friendly, easy to navigate and easy to learn how to use. In this blog I will outline how to upload an article, add links, images and media and add SEO attributes like page titles, descriptions and keywords.

1)    Add New Page/Post – The first thing you need to do after logging into your Wordpress website is to click “add new”. Click “add new” in either the page or post section depending on how your blog has been set up.

2)    Adding a Title. Next add a title to your blog. Remember it should not be too long but something catchy that visitors will be drawn to. For the purpose of this exercise I have chosen the title “The ultimate guide to uploading a blog in Wordpress”.

3)    Adding Text. Add text to your blog by typing in the space provided.

4)    Adding Links. If you would like to add links from Keywords in your blog (recommended to help the SEO value of your website) simply have to:

• a)    Highlight the words.
• b)    Click on the link button.
• c)    In the pop up box add the URL that you would like to link to. For external links I would recommend ticking the box “Open link in a new window/tab”. This means the link will open a new window for your visitors and keep them on your website. Next, add a title for the link. The “add link”.

5)    Adding an Image. To add an image to your Worpress blog or article simply:

• a)    Click add image.
• b)    Select your image file.
• c)    Add a title, ALT text (and if you want to add a caption).
• d)    Align your image to the left, right or centre of the page. 
• e)    Pick the size you would like for the image.
• f)    Click insert into post.

6)    Media. To add other media to your blog or article you can click on the add video or media buttons to the right of the add image button.

7)    Pick a Category. Choose the right category for your article or blog. 

8)    Add SEO. This is very important for your websites visibility in search engines like Google, Yahoo and Bing. I would recommend using All in One SEO package in Wordpress. To optimise your blogs scroll down to the end of the page and in the SEO section:

• a)    Add a title. This can be the same as your article title if you like. Remember to have some strong Keywords in your title.
• b)    Add a meta description of the article or blog. This is important for visitors to search engines as they will read the description and decide whether they want to visit your website.
• c)    Add up to 20 Keywords. While Google generally ignores this area, Yahoo and Bing still pay attention to Keyword Meta Tags. 

9)    Save the draft of your blog.

10)    Publish your blog to your website.
