On my down time from work as an SEO consultant I can often be found with a camera in my hand. Photography is a hobby that I have enjoyed for over 10 years. As a (wannabe) photographer one of the problems I face when displaying my photographs is that Google does not understand images. It cannot see the detail of information that humans can see. There are a number of ways that you can help search engines like Google to help understand your webpage with images. This is especially important if the only content on your page is an image. I will use my photography website as an example of how to help Google understand and find your images. The webpage shows a photograph of Galway City and I have outlined 5 ways that I have optimized the page to help search engines understand and read my photograph.
)Use an Image Title and ALT Tag. This should be a descriptive summary of the image using keywords. For example - "Black and White Photograph of Galway City, Ireland".
Incorporate the image information into your URL. You should be aiming for a couple of strong keywords.
)Have a strong descriptive title for the page. This will help search engines find your webpage with the image.
)Use textual content around the image. This helps describe your image to search engines
)Introduce commenting functionality so that more text is created around your images. This will help search engines understand your image. Visitors will most likely use keywords relating to your image, which will help optimize the page.
