To highlight the importance of the new Google +1 button you can now view your +1 progress in Google Webmaster Tools. This is quite significant as it means Google is really pushing the +1 button.
The +1 button is similar to the Facebook Like Button and I have the feeling that Google looked at how successful the Facebook Like Button was and thought “I’d like a piece of that pie!” The Google +1 Button will also be a ranking factor for your website in the Google search engine results. So, SEO is another reason why you should include the button on your website.
If you haven’t got the Google +1 Button yet for your website you can either:
1) Download a Plugin for your Joomla or Wordpress Website
2) Download the code from Google and insert manually into the HTML code of your website. You can do that here.
Google will also be launching a social networking site soon, called Google+. This is another front against the mighty Facebook position as leaders of Social Media worldwide. It will be interesting to see how Google+ will do, as the last attempt at socializing Google, Buzz, failed miserably. I still remember seeing the stream of messages :“Hello is this thing on?”, “Anyone out there?” Everyone was lost! Google will have learnt from their lack of buzz with Google Buzz and hopefully will develop an exciting new platform for us social media addicts to use.
